check engine light diagnostics in tucson
When your Check Engine Light comes on, the trouble code is only the starting point. At D & D Automotive in Tucson, we diagnose the system behind the code to determine the actual cause before recommending repairs. Our diagnostic process combines professional scan equipment, live data, electrical testing and hands-on verification to help avoid unnecessary parts replacement.
a trouble code is not a diagnosis
A diagnostic trouble code tells us what the vehicle’s computer has detected, but it does not automatically identify the failed part. The same code can be caused by wiring problems, sensors, mechanical faults, vacuum leaks, fuel delivery issues, software or other conditions. Replacing a part based only on a trouble code can waste time and money. Our job is to test the system and verify the cause.
how we diagnose a check ENGINE LIGHT
Proper diagnosis begins by retrieving the stored trouble codes and freeze-frame data, then looking at the conditions that caused the computer to set the code. From there, we use live scan data, electrical testing, mechanical testing and system-specific procedures as needed. We verify the fault before recommending a repair and confirm proper operation afterward.
This approach is especially important with intermittent problems, multiple trouble codes, misfires, electrical faults and vehicles that have already had parts replaced without solving the original problem.
real diagnostic examples from our shop
2011 Ford Fiesta — P0302/P0303 High-RPM Misfire
This Fiesta developed a misfire around 4,500 RPM even though compression was good and ignition and fuel components had already been addressed. Instead of replacing more parts, we investigated the PCM’s misfire detection strategy. An engine parameter reset followed by a crankshaft profile relearn drive procedure eliminated the high-RPM misfire.
2013 Chevrolet Malibu — P0411 Secondary Air Injection
Testing showed the air pump and control valve were operating, but the system still wasn’t producing the expected airflow. Further diagnosis found carbon-restricted secondary-air passages. Cleaning the passages restored proper system operation and resolved the P0411 fault.
when your check engine light comes on
A steady Check Engine Light means the vehicle’s computer has detected a problem that should be diagnosed. A flashing Check Engine Light can indicate an active misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter and should be addressed immediately. If your vehicle is running poorly, losing power, stalling or flashing the Check Engine Light, avoid continued driving when possible.
